Founder Story: Azul School of Martial Arts

How Azul School of Martial Arts Began

Azul School of Martial Arts was founded on a lifelong commitment to martial arts, family values, and personal growth.

My martial arts journey began in April of 1996. I was 11 years old when my parents enrolled me in Taekwondo classes in The Woodlands, Texas. Their goal was simple: help me develop self-confidence and self-control. What began as an after-school activity quickly became a defining part of my life.

Through training, I gained more than physical fitness. I learned that I could overcome challenges, work through difficulty, and accomplish goals that once felt impossible.

That lesson became clear after competing in my first martial arts tournament and earning first place. That experience showed me that discipline, effort, and consistency lead to real results. From that moment on, martial arts became more than a hobby—it became a way of life.

A Lifetime of Martial Arts Training and Discipline

With over 30 years of martial arts experience, I’ve faced many challenges along the way. While safety has always been a top priority—and injuries were thankfully minimal—the greatest challenge was time.

When I decided to add Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) to my training, I was in my final year of college while working full-time teaching martial arts. I trained on lunch breaks, weekends, and any spare moment I could find.

After graduating, my commitment only deepened. Many days started at 5:00 a.m. with morning classes, followed by work, lunchtime training, evening classes, and late nights—often leaving the school around 10:00 p.m. That discipline and consistency now shape how we train students at Azul School of Martial Arts.

Why We Chose the Name “Azul”

Azul School of Martial Arts is a family dream realized.

For years, my wife and I prayed with our children for the opportunity to open a martial arts school of our own. When that opportunity finally came, we wanted a name that represented more than just one person.

“Azul” is my wife’s name and means blue in Spanish. The school already carried a blue theme, and the name reflected what mattered most to us—family, faith, and purpose.

Because Azul was built as a family dream, we are proud to offer a family-friendly martial arts school focused on safety, respect, and confidence-building both on and off the mats.

Building Confidence Through Martial Arts for Kids and Adults

Choosing a favorite class to teach is difficult, but if I had to choose, it would be our kids martial arts classes.

Over decades of teaching, I’ve seen firsthand how martial arts can transform children. One former student began training with us at eight years old because his parents wanted him to build confidence. He was shy but respectful. When he earned his first belt promotion, his sense of pride was unmistakable.

Through consistent training, he eventually earned his black belt. Even more meaningful, he chose to give back by helping teach other students. That leadership carried into his academic life, where his strong work ethic led to college acceptance and graduation.

Today, he is a successful young man who credits martial arts as a foundation for who he became. Stories like this are why we do what we do.

Our Mission at Azul School of Martial Arts
